The main reason this seal fails is because it gets dry and sticks, then when the cap is tightened the twisting action tears the seal.  To avoid this make sure you always tighten the filler cap by hand (you will still need to use the group cup to take it off).  If it is too tight to do that then rub some cooking oil into the seal so that it spins more easily.
